Only someone holding a private hire driver's licence may drive a private hire vehicle. Journeys must be pre-booked, normally by phone or in person at a cab office. Private Hire Vehicles cannot ply for hire in the street or at taxi ranks. These vehicles have a roof sign and display a white plate on the rear of the vehicle. We issue licences for taxis and ensure that the vehicles are suitable and adequately insured to ensure high standards of safety. A 'Hackney Carriage' is more commonly called a Taxi. This particular licence is required for any vehicle that will ply for hire, be flagged down or hired at a taxi rank. It is a good idea to ask the Council to verify that the system meets these requirements before purchasing. You may source your own systems – but it must meet the Council's requirements.
Applicants should make enquiries with several suppliers before deciding on a system. Prices and payment terms vary, depending on the system purchased. All licensed vehicles are required to have cameras installed, whether new vehicles or renewals.
